Former Maine West coach charged in hazing

After a five-month investigation of allegations of hazing at Maine West High School in Des Plaines, the Cook County state's attorney's office yesterday charged former Maine West High School head varsity soccer coach Michael Divincenzo with hazing and allowing it to happen, while dropping charges against six juveniles. State panel won't consolidate 18 virtual school appeals

Administrators, district attorneys, school board members, union representatives and community members packed the meeting last night of the Illinois State Charter School Commission in Chicago to argue against a virtual charter school firm's request to fight 18 suburban school boards' rejection of its plans for a Fox Valley virtual school in one big appeal. The commission went against its chairman in the end and called for the 18 separate appeals. Full story.

Carol Stream library board president gets Kuhn Road power

The newly seated Carol Stream library board last night gave its president the power to sell -- or not sell -- its Kuhn Road property. It's the same authority the old board granted to its president that new board members objected to while campaigning for their seats. The difference between new and old, new Board President Jim Bailey said, is that any final sales contract requires the approval of the board of trustees. Full story.

Truck driver hurt after I-290 crash rollover

A 73-year-old man was seriously injured yesterday afternoon when a semitrailer truck he was driving overturned on the ramp from westbound I-290 to Route 83 near Elmhurst, state police said. The truck driver, John Sfondilis of Elk Grove Village, was trapped inside the cab of the vehicle and had to be pulled out by Elmhurst firefighters. Full story.

Elgin police honor the fallen

The Elgin Police Department yesterday held its annual memorial service to honor the lives lost in the line of duty during the past year. While bagpipes played and police officers lowered flags to half staff, Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda addressed his fellow officers and the public. "While words on days like today can seem empty, they are at least a start," Swoboda said. "And when those words are coupled with a physical gathering, like we are doing now, that adds strength to those words." Full story.

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan visits U-46

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan connected with his former colleagues in the suburbs yesterday to take stock of how the federal agency could do its job better. Duncan, who worked with Elgin Area School District U-46 Superintendent Jose Torres when the two were administrators at Chicago Public Schools, took a tour and participated in an education round-table at Streamwood High School, one of 56 schools in Illinois' second largest school district. Young motorcycle driver dies in Elgin Twp. crash

A 21-year-old Sycamore woman died after the motorcycle she was riding collided with a semitrailer yesterday afternoon in Elgin Township, authorities said. Angela Hansen, of the 1600 block of Sparkhayes Drive, was thrown off her motorcycle after the collision on Route 20 near Plank Road, the Kane County sheriff's office said in a news release. Hansen, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene. Full story.

Bulls fight right to the finish

This Bulls team might someday be nominated for the Guts and Grind Hall of Fame, but it didn't have enough to extend the defending champion Heat beyond five games. Miami hung on to win 94-91 and moves on to face Indiana or New York in the Eastern Conference finals. Johnny Oduya and Marcus Kruger scored in the third period, Corey Crawford made 20 saves and the Blackhawks beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 in the opener of their second-round playoff series last night. The Hawks dominated the final two periods in its first game in the Western Conference semifinals since it won the Stanley Cup in 2010. Full story.

Illini Caravan visits suburbs

An annual statewide tour called the Illini Caravan, featuring coaches and athletes from the University of Illinois, stopped in Rolling Meadows yesterday to discuss recent seasons and what lies ahead for the basketball, soccer and gymnastics teams.
