Cougars fall in 10 innings

CLINTON, Iowa — Dillon Maples worked 5 innings in his debut for the Kane County Cougars and exited with the lead, but the Clinton LumberKings rallied for a 10-inning, 7-6 victory Sunday at Ashford University Field.

Maples surrendered 3 runs in his 5 innings, with Clinton (16-18) taking the early advantage in the second. Tyler Marlette doubled, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly from Gaby Guerrero.

Clinton added 2 runs in the third with Dario Pizzano singling home Ketel Marte and Brock Hebert.

Jeimer Candelario homered in the top of the fourth to put the Cougars (17-16) on the board. In the sixth, the Cougars grabbed the lead with Dan Vogelbach singling in Pin-Chieh Chen and Rock Shoulders hitting a grand slam off reliever Richarde White.

Lendy Castillo (0-3) was unable to hang on for the Cougars as he gave up a 3-run shot to Janelfry Zorrilla in the sixth after the first two hitters in the inning reached on walks. Castillo didn’t give up another baserunner until the 10th, but the Cougars didn’t do much with relievers Jochi Ogando and Grady Wood (1-1).

Castillo again walked the first two batters in the 10th before Patrick Kivlehan bounced a single up the middle to bring in Hebert with the winning run.

The Cougars wrap up their road trip in a game against the LumberKings on Monday from Ashford University Field with a 12:30 p.m. first pitch. Right-hander Pierce Johnson (1-2) starts for the Cougars against lefty Tyler Pike (1-3).

The Cougars return to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Tuesday when they take on the Peoria Chiefs at 6:30 p.m.
