Outdoor makeover week 1: Paradise at home

This part of the backyard is stuck in the ’80s. There is hardly enough room for the small gas grill and two chairs. The step is missing in front of the door that leads to the garage. There is little to no landscape around the area and there is no lighting. We are a young family that spends a lot of time outdoors. We like to entertain our family as well as the neighbors throughout the year. I would like to see the yard meet our growing family. As our children get older, the yard can grow and change to meet their needs. It would be great to compliment the yard with all weather outdoor furniture, plants, lighting and a bigger gas grill.

Budget: $2,000 (lighting products only)

This family definitely needs an inviting space to spend time with their family and friends.

By creating an outdoor kitchen with a built-in bar and table area for seating, they will be able to accommodate more people for entertaining. Accent it with all-weather furniture and great lighting, and this will be a space the family can enjoy for a long time. And as the kids get older, they will want to bring their friends over to hang out in the summer time in the great atmosphere that has been created.

Recommendations:

A) Appropriately scaled outdoor lanterns added to the side of the garage which will add good general illumination to the outdoor kitchen.

B) LED landscape lighting added around the patio to provide accents to the foliage and path lighting for safety. And with LED lighting built right in, they should last for more than 15 years without maintenance or lamp changes.

C) Built in LED “hardscape” linear lighting under the bar and table tops to create a soft ambience to the space while providing subtle illumination.

D) A low voltage grill light added for task lighting at the grilling station.

E) An illuminated urn planter to provide a fun conversational piece.
