Cardinal blesses families at new Hoffman Estates hospital
Cardinal Francis George blessed babies and new mothers yesterday at the new Women & Children's Hospital recently opened by Alexian Brothers Health Center in Hoffman Estates. The cardinal missed the hospital's opening while he was in Vatican City for the election of the pope. Full story and picture gallery.
72 teachers in U-46 get layoff notices
Elgin Area School District U-46 cut 72 teachers as part of its annual reductions in force. A high number of retirees this year and an increase in staffing needs could mean that many of those 72 will return in the fall after all. Full story.
Glen Ellyn OKs 22-home development
The largest new housing development in Glen Ellyn in a decade is scheduled for construction after zoning approvals were granted last night. The village board voted 6-0 to approve variance requests for K. Hovnanian Homes, which plans to build 22 single-family homes at the northwest corner of Sheehan Avenue and Route 53. Full story.
Kane County flood victims can apply for tax breaks
Residents who experienced significant flood damage in Kane County might be eligible for a property tax break on those taxes to be paid in 2014. Property owners need to apply for a reassessment of their home. They can also apply for a Natural Disaster Homestead Exemption. Full story.
FEMA flood teams visit DuPage neighborhoods
Two preliminary damage assessment teams started a countywide survey of homes in DuPage County yesterday in order to collect data to determine if residents could potentially receive government assistance. Illinois officials have to ask the President Barack Obama for a disaster declaration before FEMA can help. Full story.
Nets win, cut Bulls' lead 3-2
The Brooklyn Nets beat the Bulls 110-91 last night to cut the Bulls' series lead 3-2 in the first round of playoffs. The Bulls were outscored 15-1 down the stretch. They'll host game 6 on Thursday. Full story.
Cubs' bullpen providing much-needed relief
Cubs manager Dale Sveum is throwing convention out the window. What Sveum is doing with the Cubs' bullpen is borne of necessity and the need to improvise, but it seems to be working.
