Coast Guard boat safety checks offered

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering free vessel safety checks to all boaters to look for problems and ensure each meets the minimum state and federal safety requirements.

Two exam sessions will be held from 10 a.m. until finished on Saturday, May 19, and Sunday, May 25, at Bald Knob Marina, 515 Bald Knob Road in Johnsburg. The kinds of boats that can be checked are johnboats, paddlecraft, runabouts, sailboats and cabin cruisers. Vessels that pass earn the right to have the “VSC” decal affixed. Those that don’t will receive a documented list of what needs to be worked on.

No citations will be issued by the auxiliary. For more information, call Roy Shiflett at (773) 790-3122.
