Car stolen at Chicago gas station with baby inside

Chicago police say a man jumped into a car left idling at a West Side gas station and took off with the vehicle and a 1-year-old girl who had been left inside.

Police Department spokesman Michael Sullivan says the child’s mother had pulled into a gas station in the Humboldt Park area on Wednesday night and left the girl inside with the engine running. A man then stole the car and fled.

Police found the car abandoned nearby with the child inside. Sullivan says she appeared by be in good condition but was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

He says the girl’s mother knows the suspect from the neighborhood, but no one was in custody as of Thursday morning.
