Wisconsin inland fishing season kicks off next month

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin anglers itching to go after that big one won’t have to wait much longer. The state’s inland fishing season opens May 4.

Department of Natural Resources fish experts say anglers might have to adjust their tactics to compensate for the cold spring and low water temperatures. They recommend fishing in areas with good exposure to sun and fishing slower and deeper.

They say northern pike likely will be feeding heavily in bays and emerging plant growth. Walleye will be transitioning from spawning habitats to feeding habitats. Muskies and perch will be at peak spawn and crappies and blue gills will be in the shallows looking for warmth from the sun. Trout fishing might be better in the afternoon after the water has warmed up and bugs become active.
