Glen Ellyn library closes until April 29

Extensive flooding at the Glen Ellyn Public Library has forced the closure of the building until April 29, officials said.

Staff members discovered five feet of water early Thursday morning in the mechanical room, located in the basement of the building at 400 Duane St. The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company was called to pump water out of the building, though by midafternoon Thursday, the room still contained water, according to Anthony McGinn, the library’s marketing coordinator.

The library’s collection has not been damaged, he said.

“Our Library Director Dawn Bussey is working very hard to remove the water, repair the damages and ensure the safety of the building before reopening on Monday, April 29,” McGinn said.

Elsewhere in Glen Ellyn, village officials reported several area lakes overflowing, including Lambert Lake and Lake Ellyn, where public works crews placed 400 sandbags at the northern bank to manage flooding and erosion. Several local detention ponds were also reported to be overflowed.

Officials invited residents to create their own sandbags at the Montclair parking lot. They also said damaged items could be placed curbside for Allied Waste collection by 7 a.m. on Saturday.
