DuPage Forest Preserve offers summer camps for kids

How will your child spend summer? Sitting on the couch watching TV, or riding horses, feeding farm animals or exploring the outdoors? Your child could discover a new corner of the world through one of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s summer programs for kids.

All programs are day camps, and some include overnight camp-outs. To find detailed information and registration forms, visit the district’s website, dupageforest.org, and click on “Things to Do” and “Kids Camps.” Registration deadlines vary, but programs fill quickly.

“Camp FBW” at Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center, 3609 Spring Road, Oak Brook. Ages 4 to 12 enjoy nature explorations through half-day camps that can be combined for full-day fun. Morning and afternoon sessions take place June 24 to 27 and July 8 to 11. Each half-day session is $100 for DuPage County residents, $125 for others. Call (630) 850-8110.

“Wildlife Explorers” at Willowbrook Wildlife Center, 525 S. Park Blvd., Glen Ellyn. Ages 6 to 8 learn about the environment and how they are part of nature through games, activities and stories. Each session concludes with a cookout at Herrick Lake Forest Preserve in Wheaton. Three sessions are available: June 17 to 20, July 15 to 18 and Aug. 5 to 8. “Kline Creek Farmhands” at Kline Creek Farm, 1N600 County Farm Road, West Chicago. Ages 7 to 12 experience life on a historic farm, including chores, domestic activities and games from the 1890s. Six sessions are available: June 10, 13 and 14; June 17, 20 and 21; June 24, 27 and 28; July 8, 11 and 12; July 15, 18 and 19; July 22, 25 and 26; and July 29, Aug. 1 and Aug. 2. Each session is $100 for DuPage County residents, $125 for nonresidents. Call (630) 876-5900.

“Wild by Nature” at Willowbrook Wildlife Center, 525 S. Park Blvd., Glen Ellyn. Ages 9 to 12 discover the natural history of DuPage County through safe exploration and play in wild places. Two sessions are available: June 24 to 27 and July 22 to 25. Each includes a day at Willowbrook, a day at Blackwell Forest Preserve near Warrenville, and a camp-out at Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Darien. Each session is $100 for DuPage County residents, $125 for others. Call (630) 942-6200.

“Horse Sense” at Danada Equestrian Center, 3S507 Naperville Road, Wheaton. Ages 10 to 14 enjoy hands-on experiences with horses while learning about day-to-day stable activities. Crafts, games and supervised lead-line horseback rides round out the program. Five sessions are available: June 3 to 7, June 17 to 21, July 8 to 12, July 22 to 26 and Aug. 5 to 9. Each session is $203 for DuPage County residents, $232 for others. Call (630) 668-6012.

“Riding Sense” at Danada Equestrian Center, 3S507 Naperville Road, Wheaton. Ages 12 to 14 discover all the fun of the “Horse Sense” camp plus a riding program. This camp includes the grooming and bathing of horses, hayrides, arts and crafts, and a daily one-hour riding lesson. Five sessions are available: June 10 to 14, June 24 to 28, July 15 to 19, July 29 to Aug. 2 and Aug. 12 to 16. Each session is $342 for DuPage County residents, $376 for others. Call (630) 668-6012.
