Voters reject Elk Grove fire district’s cost cutting

Voters Tuesday rejected the Elk Grove Rural Fire Protection District’s request to reduce the size of its governing board to five members from seven to save money.

With all six precincts reporting, unofficial vote totals show 14 “no” votes to 12 “yes” votes.

If approved, the size of the board would have been cut in the 2015 election, as terms of incumbents expire.

Board members serve six-year terms. The move would have saved $3,000 per year in pay for each seat eliminated.

The district serves about a one-square-mile area of unincorporated Elk Grove Township where the bulk of the residents live in mobile homes.
