Surprises don’t deter community teams

With just a few weeks left in the Fittest Loser Community Challenge, teams are working even harder to counter a flurry of surprises and setbacks that hit the teams in the past couple weeks, causing two team members to drop out of the challenge and two others to reduce their levels of participation.

A member of the Schaumburg Shedders has been forced to leave the challenge due to a torn meniscus and a surgery planned for later this month. According to their captain and trainer, Gina Phillips, the Schaumburg Shedders are not letting the loss slow them down and have lost an average of 10 pounds each.

Proud of her team’s accomplishments, Phillips writes, “I am so happy for them, they are working so hard, changing their daily habits.”

Another Schaumburg team, Team Waist Management, experienced a setback while one of their team members recovers from a car accident. The team’s trainer and captain, Lee Collins, reported that the injured team member will remain on the team, but will not be able to work as hard as before. As Collins puts it, “I’ll be taking it easy on her from here on out, but she is still committed and I’m proud of her.”

Ed Poczatek, another member of the team, didn’t let the team’s trouble slow him down as he completed the Easter egg Shuffle 5K at Busse Woods over the holiday weekend.

The Wood Dale Warriors lost a member when one of the team members suddenly quit at the end of March. According to team member Stephanie DiMaso, the interruption to the team has renewed their motivation.

“Being down a person on our team has really given the Wood Dale Warriors an extra push of motivation to work even harder than we already have been.” This week one of their members will be competing in an 8K, and the rest of the team will be taking a boxing class together.

A member of Waist Management of Salt Creek is reducing her level of participation for a much happier reason — she had stopped losing weight and recently announced that she is pregnant.

The excitement hasn’t caused Salt Creek Waist Management to lose momentum, and although she might not be able to participate in hot yoga with the rest of the team, she is keeping up with the team’s exercise routines and healthy eating habits.
