Senate unveils budget proposal, tax cut uncertain

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana senators are releasing a state budget which could determine whether Gov. Mike Pence wins his tax cut this year.

House Republicans crafted a $30 billion state budget which would take the money Pence sought for the cut and spend it on roads and schools. But Senate Republicans could restore the tax cut as part of their spending plan set for release Thursday.

Members of the Senate Appropriations Committee are set to discuss the proposal Thursday morning.

Lawmakers in both chambers have expressed concern over spending on a tax cut without filling a transportation funding shortfall.

Meanwhile, Pence has taken to the road asking voters to lobby their representatives and senators for his tax cut. A national tea party group's efforts on his behalf angered House Republicans.
