Woman dies in fiery I-88 collision

A semitrailer truck crossed through the median on I-88 near Route 56 last night and struck an SUV head-on, causing both vehicles to burst into flames. The female driver of the SUV died, while the semi driver sustained minor injuries. Westbound lanes of I-88 remained closed for more than five hours as of about 1 a.m. while state police investigated. Algonquin OKs video gambling

The Algonquin village board took a preliminary vote last night to OK video gambling within the village while simultaneously strengthening the ordinance beyond the state's requirements. Revenue from the machines will go into the village's recreation fund. Full story.

Schaumburg approves yard for beekeepers

Over the protests of several neighbors, Schaumburg trustees last night approved housing for hundreds of thousands of new residents -- bees -- on a 1,600-square-foot area of village-owned property off Plum Grove Road. The community bee yard for local beekeeping hobbyists was approved by a 5-1 vote after the village board heard from both concerned critics and passionate supporters. Full story.

Kirchoff Road development advances in Rolling Meadows

With one potential snag, tax assistance and rezoning for the new Meadows Marketplace and the grocery store planned there moved ahead at last night's Rolling Meadows City Council meeting. The project would renovate the Kirchoff Road shopping center in the city's downtown that held a Dominick's until about nine years ago. Full story.

Norovirus blamed for O'Hare sickness

Several passengers who fell ill before boarding a flight at O'Hare International Airport Monday may have come down with norovirus. A total of nine passengers from the same Scandinavian tour group were taken to area hospitals late Monday night. Full story.

'Biggest Loser's' Danni Allen happy to be home

After a whirlwind experience of becoming the top winner of reality show "The Biggest Loser," Wheeling native Danni Allen is happy to be back home. Since the finale, she's flown from coast to coast doing TV appearances and radio interviews while trying to maintain workouts. Full story.

MCC receives donation worth $800,000

A Wisconsin man made a donation worth $800,000 to McHenry County College, and it will be used to establish a new scholarship -- the Forge Ahead Scholarship. That money will provide for 24 full-time scholarships and cover partial scholarships for an additional two to three people. Michael Klingenberg, of Twin Lakes, donated property and money because he believes education is one of the most important things in life. Full story.

Naperville chamber cheers on Internet sales tax amendment

The Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated a vote by the U.S. Senate last week in favor of giving states more power to collect sales tax on Internet purchases their residents make. Under current law, states can collect sales tax only from retailers that have a physical presence in their state. Full story.

Court offers good news for Philhaven project

A proposed apartment building for people with mental and physical disabilities received some support from a federal judge last week, who said he believes there was "some evidence of discriminatory intent" by the board for denying the project. The village board has twice voted down approval for the project. Full story.

Weather

Finally a little spring has sprung. Temperatures are expected to increase to about 41 degrees this afternoon, but it's only 34 degrees this morning. Temperatures will dip to 28 degrees tonight before jumping to 47 degrees tomorrow. Full story.

Traffic

Roadwork continues in East Dundee at Van Buren Street between IL Route 72 and William Street, then again on Elgin Avenue between Barrington Road and the south corporate limits of the village. The construction will last through November. Full story.

Blackhawks snuff out Flames

Ray Emery made 16 saves last night for his first shutout in three years as the Blackhawks beat the Calgary Flames 2-0. Calgary hasn't won in the United Center in 10 years. Full story.
