Jury awards $843,000 for senior’s hip fracture

A Cook County jury has awarded close to $843,000 to an elderly woman who fell and broke her hip at a Chicago nursing home.

The award was returned Wednesday in the negligence lawsuit filed against Kenwood Healthcare Center after 87-year-old Ida Mae Brown fell in 2008. The facility since has been renamed.

Brown’s attorneys say she suffered serious injuries. Jurors found that the nursing home failed to develop an appropriate care plan to address her risk for falls, even after several previous falls.

Attorney Patricia Gifford says a broken hip in a nursing home fall “is a very serious problem and can lead to further medical issues and complications.”

She says Brown’s mobility is seriously limited. Brown’s medical bills totaled around $53,000; the award was for non-economic damages.
