Illinois House says no tanning for teens

SPRINGFIELD — Just in time for spring break, the Illinois House Thursday approved a plan that would prohibit minors under age 18 from using tanning beds.

Supporters say the skin cancer risks of frequent tanning can be particularly dangerous for teens.

“Young people's cells are still developing,” said state Rep. Robyn Gabel, an Evanston Democrat and sponsor of the plan.

Gabel overcame critics who don't think the state should get involved with what parents allow their children to do.

The legislation was approved in the House by a 67-49 vote and now moves to the Illinois Senate, where Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno has worked on a similar proposal.

Spray tans would not be affected by the proposed ban.
