A suburban Chicago police detective has been charged with criminally transmitting HIV, which is a felony.

Cook County sheriff's deputies arrested Cicero Police Detective John W. Savage of LaGrange Park on Thursday at police headquarters. He was later released without posting bond after an appearance in Cook County Circuit Court in Maywood.

According to authorities, the arrest resulted from an online relationship with a 24-year-old man that evolved into a physical relationship. After an episode of unprotected sex, Savage disclosed his HIV status.

Prosecutors haven't revealed if the victim was infected.

Defense attorney Todd Pugh says the alleged victim knew Savage is HIV positive, adding prosecutors have no proof the human immunodeficiency virus was transmitted.

Cicero spokesman Ray Hanania says Savage has been suspended from his job.
