Homeless man charged with 27 counts of burglary in storage unit thefts

By Lee Filas

DuPage County Sheriff officials announced Friday that a homeless man with a last known address in Bartlett has been charged with 27 counts of burglary for stealing from storage units in unincorporated DuPage County near Hanover Park.

David A. Udaundo, 41, formerly of the 900 block of Balsam Lane in Bartlett, is expected to answer the charges in bond court later this morning, DuPage County Sheriff John E. Zaruba announced in a news release.

Detectives have been investigating burglaries that occurred between April 1, 2012, and June 15, 2012, at the Cubesmart Storage, in the 25W600 block of Army Trail Road of DuPage County, officials said.

Officials said during the time period, deputies took reports from 27 victims, each of whom reported a theft in their storage unit.

The yearlong investigation led to the arrest of Udaundo, who was charged with one count for each person victimized, officials said. The total amount stolen is unknown at this time.

Udaundo is currently in the DuPage County Jail while awaiting bond court later.
