A Cicero Police Department officer was formally charged Thursday with criminally transmitting HIV, authorities said.

A 24-year-old man told police he and the officer, 38-year-old John Savage of La Grange Park, went to a movie on July 29, 2012, and afterward went to Savage's house, where they engaged in sexual activity, according to the Cook County sheriff's police.

Later, the victim asked if Savage was HIV-positive, and he said he was, police said.

The victim told the La Grange Park Police Department, which called sheriff's police for assistance in the investigation.

The officer was arrested Wednesday and appeared in bond court Thursday. He was released on bond, though he is due back in court March 21.
