6-month-old child, father hit by gunfire

A 6-month-old child and her father are reported in critical condition at a Chicago hospital after being shot while the father was changing the child's diaper.

Chicago police say Jonathan Watkins was standing outside a minivan Monday attending the child when a gunman approached and opened fire. Watkins was shot in the side and buttocks and suffered a graze wound to his face. The child, Jonylah Watkins, suffered several gunshot wounds.

A Comer Children's Hospital spokesman says the baby underwent surgery and is in the intensive care unit.

Watkins is being treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where police say he is in critical condition.

Family members said they had no idea why Watkins and Jonylah were shot, and dismissed as untrue police assertions the father has gang ties.
