Map amendment deserves a chance
Illinois government is broken. Career politicians go behind closed doors and rig elections by drawing legislative maps to benefit themselves. The political representatives should not be defining the districts and choosing their voters. No competition means no choice of representation for the voter. Today, the legislator doesn't really have to worry about listening to constituents; they are more likely to represent their campaign donors.
The Independent Map Amendment will reform the rules and require a process of drawing maps by an independent commission, with balanced party representation that is transparent, impartial and fair. Illinois elections should reflect the will of the people, not the politicians. This amendment is supported statewide by 563,974 registered voters who signed petitions. Now, the Cook County Circuit Court has ruled against the constitutionality of the amendment. This decision is being appealed to the Illinois Supreme Court. I hope they will rule in favor of democracy by supporting the Independent Map amendment being on the ballot in November.
Illinoisans deserve legislative elections where candidates listen to their constituents and voters have choices. Supporting the Independent Map Amendment will accomplish that.
