Endorsement: Hanson for Antioch village president

Incumbent Lawrence Hanson can seem imposing and little overbearing, but you can’t deny the level of accomplishment he’s achieved in one term as village president. He’s restructured financial arrangements to save costs in insurance, fire safety and emergence dispatch, all while keeping an eye on maintaining or strengthening village services and navigating a crisis in confidence involving Antioch Rescue Services. Nor does his style seem to be contributing to or creating ill will in village government. His challenger for a second term, Mary Gaborek, has been active in civic and educational projects in town, and she knows the village and the issues it is facing well. She is critical of recent water rate increases and what she sees as lack of structure at board meetings and indecision within top leadership. But Hanson’s successes, backed by an additional 14 years experience on the village board, leave open questions regarding whether or how much she can improve on his work. Hanson has earned the chance to complete restructuring and improvement projects he began in his first term and he is endorsed.
