Elgin man killed in Barrington Hills crash

By Melissa Silverberg

An Elgin man was killed and four others hospitalized Sunday after a four-vehicle crash in Barrington Hills, officials said.

Ronald Ziolo, of Elgin, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, officials from the Cook County medical examiner's office said early Monday. An autopsy is scheduled for later today, officials said.

Barrington Hills officials responded to the crash at 3 p.m. Sunday on Route 59, south of Dundee Road. According to the preliminary investigation, a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban was driving north on Route 59 when it sideswiped a 2005 Toyota driving south, causing the pileup, police said.

After the first collision, the Chevrolet Suburban crashed head on into a 2001 Dodge Intrepid that also was traveling south. A fourth vehicle, a 2003 Ford Escape, was unable to avoid the accident and rear-ended the Dodge, according to the release.

Ziolo, the driver of the Dodge, died from his injuries.

A passenger in his vehicle, a 44-year-old woman from Orlando, Fla., was taken to Saint Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Chevrolet Suburban, an 18-year-old Barrington Hills man, as well as the driver and passenger of the Ford -- a 44-year-old woman and a 61-year-old man, both of Fox River Grove -- were taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Toyota was uninjured and released at the scene.

Police said the crash tied up traffic on Route 59 for several hours Sunday afternoon.

Palatine Rural and Barrington Fire departments provided medical assistance on the scene, while Barrington, South Barrington, Palatine and Fox River Grove police departments all responded to the crash. Accident reconstruction assistance was provided by the Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County.

The crash is still being investigated by the Barrington Hills Police Department as well as the Cook County medical examiner's office.
