Recalls this week: motor scooters, battery packs

Motorized scooters that can unexpectedly accelerate and battery packs that can overheat are among this week’s recalled products. Other recalls include coffee makers that can overheat and mattresses that can pose a fire hazard.

Motor Scooters

DETAILS: Motor Scooters with Hello Kitty graphics made by Zhejiang Qunying Vehicle Co. and distributed by Dynacraft BCS Inc. The battery-operated City Scooters are pink and black with Hello Kitty graphics on the front panel, footboard, and rear fenders. They were made between Sept. 9, 2012 and Dec. 3, 2012. Model number “8801-03” and the date of manufacture, formatted as “YYYY/MM/DD,” are printed on a data label on the underside of the scooter’s center platform. Serial numbers for the recalled scooters have the letters “QYCEI” followed by a six-digit number in the following range: 000001 through 014456. The serial number can be found etched on the underside of the scooter’s center platform near the data label. They were sold at Toys R Us stores and Toysrus.com nationwide from Oct. 2012 to Jan. 2013.

WHY: The scooters can accelerate suddenly while in use, causing the rider to lose control and fall.

INCIDENTS: Nine reports of the scooters accelerating unexpectedly, including three minor injuries that include a bloody nose and bruises.

Battery Pack

DETAILS: Ryobi Lithium 18-volt 4Ah Battery Packs made by Techtronic Industries Co. Ltd. and imported by One World Technologies Inc. They have model number P108 and part number 130429028. The battery pack is green, silver and black. “Ryobi” and “Lithium+18V” are printed in white lettering on both sides of the battery pack. The model and part number can be found on the data plate located on the bottom of the battery pack. They were sold at Home Depot stores and online at Homedepot.com, and at other retailers from Sept. 2012 to Dec. 2012.

WHY: The battery pack can overheat and burst while on a charger, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.

INCIDENTS: Four reports of battery packs overheating, resulting in minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.

HOW MANY: About 54,200 in the United States and 2,200 in Canada.

Coffee Makers

DETAILS: Jerdon Style model CM12B one-cup coffee makers, with date code 1217. The coffee makers are black and have an oval, red indicator light above the on/off switch. The coffee maker brews a single, eight to 12-ounce cup of coffee. The phrases “FIRST CLASS” and “JERDON” are printed in white letters on the front of the product. The model and date code are imprinted on a nameplate located on the bottom of the coffeemaker. They were sold from July 2012 to Jan. 2013.

WHY: The coffeemaker can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers. .

INCIDENTS: Four reports of coffee makers overheating. No injuries have been reported.

Lanyards

DETAILS: Easy Go XP Lock Via Ferrata Lanyards made by Singing Rock and imported by Liberty Mountain. They are used for shock absorption on Via Ferrata mountain climbing routes. The lanyard has two elasticized webbing branches with self-locking carabiners at each end. Recalled units can be identified by the elasticized webbing. “EASY GO XP LOCK” is printed on a white tag sewn into the zipper pouch. They were sold from April 2011 to Aug. 2012.

WHY: The elastic webbing on the lanyards can deteriorate over time and break while in use, posing a risk of serious injury or death to the climber.

INCIDENTS: None reported.

Mattresses

DETAILS: SlumberWorld First Edition, New Edition, Limited Edition and Limited Edition Deluxe mattresses. The mattresses are white and “SlumberWorld First Edition,” `’SlumberWorld New Edition,” `’SlumberWorld Limited Edition” or “SlumberWorld Limited Edition Deluxe” are sewn onto the front border of the mattress. Mattresses with dates of manufacture between Jan. 2011 and March 2012 are included in this recall. The model number and the date of manufacture are printed on the mattress’ white federal label. They were sold in SlumberWorld stores in Hawaii from Jan. 2011 through March 2012.The following model numbers and mattress sizes are included in this recall: 829 First Edition in twin and full size, 1213 Limited Edition in twin, full, queen, king, and California king sizes, and 1214 Limited Edition Deluxe or New Edition in twin, full, queen, king, and California king sizes.

WHY: The mattresses fail to meet the mandatory federal open flame standard for mattresses, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

INCIDENTS: None reported.

Christmas Trees

DETAILS: Pre-lit artificial Christmas trees made by Redwood Pacific Ltd. and imported by Balsam Hill LLC. They were sold from July 2012 through Dec. 2012. Model numbers and tree names can be found at http://www.cpsc.gov/en/Recalls/2013/Balsam-Hill-Recalls-Pre-lit-Christmas-Trees/

WHY: The remote control receiver box attached to the Christmas tree can overheat and melt, posing burn and shock hazards to consumers.

INCIDENTS: 10 reports of the Christmas tree’s remote control receiver box overheating and melting. No injuries were reported.
