Wheaton loses in tournament opener

HOLLAND, Mich. — Making its first appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament since 2007, the Wheaton women’s basketball team fell at No. 2-ranked Hope 64-37 on Friday night. Wheaton finishes the season with a record of 22-6, its first 20-win season since the 2006-07 season.

Wheaton was 16 of 47 from the field and 1 of 9 from the 3-point line. Wheaton struggled again from the free-throw line, shooting just 4 of 13. Hope won the rebounding battle 43-35.

Hannah Considine was the only Thunder player to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points. Ellie Zeller had 7 points and Breanna Bohlen added 6 points. Maris Hovee led Wheaton with 8 rebounds.

Senior point guard Brooke Olson (Wheaton North) finished her career fourth on Wheaton’s all-time assists list (367), ninth in steals (187), sixth in made free throws (269), second in made 3-pointers (165) and ninth in scoring (1,136 points). Olson set a new school-record with 67 made 3-pointers.

The Wheaton men host their NCAA Tournament opener at 7 p.m. Saturday at King Arena.
