State trooper, three others hurt in Wheaton crash

By Christopher Placek Lee Filas

A female Illinois state trooper was among four people injured Thursday morning in a multivehicle crash in Wheaton, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 7:45 a.m. near the intersection of Gary Avenue and Geneva Road, according to Monique Bond, a spokeswoman for the Illinois State Police.

Emergency crews had to extricate some of the injured people and transported them to area hospitals. Authorities said the injuries were not life-threatening.

A witness told WBBM Newsradio 780 the trooper's squad car struck the back of a woman's car. The woman's husband said she was nearly pushed into oncoming traffic before the trooper's car struck his wife's car again.

The trooper's vehicle continued down Geneva Road and hit several other cars, WBBM reported.

A fire department source told WBBM it is believed the trooper had a medical emergency. The trooper works in District 2, which includes DuPage County.

Bond said the trooper had been released from the hospital Thursday afternoon.

She said the cause of the crash hasn't been determined and more details will be made available once the investigation and crash reconstruction is complete.

Wheaton police and fire authorities directed questions to state police.
