New Batavia High School principal selected

By Susan Sarkauskas

The Batavia school board promoted Joanne Smith Tuesday to be the principal of Batavia High School.

Smith, who has worked for the district for 17 years, is the school's assistant principal for curriculum and instruction.

She will replace Lisa Hichens, who will become the district superintendent when Jack Barshinger retires at the end of June.

"Batavia High School is a wonderful place to work and has been my home for 17 years. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be the next principal," Smith said in a prepared statement.

Smith has been a math teacher, and managed implementation of a special project for the district.

She is in her first year of doctoral studies at Aurora University. She received her master's degree in mathematics from Northern Illinois University and her bachelor's degree in education from Illinois State University.

Smith lives in Elburn with her husband, Matt, and their three children.
