While I enjoyed my steamy bowl of early morning oatmeal, I scanned the Feb. 12 Business section. My stomach cringed. “New Dew: Mountain Dew introduces breakfast drink.” With a barely perceptible nod to healthy diet needs, PepsiCo has added 5 percent juice and fortified their latest drink with vitamins B and C so it’s not just soda. Since many people question the amount of sugar in their diet, the formulators kept calories in line with artificial sweeteners.
With a dose of caffeine, KickStart promoters want to persuade drinkers that their canned solution will meet energy needs for a productive morning. As a nutritionist, I urge clients to eat, not drink, their calories. Food processors are interested in their bottom line rather than the health and productivity of consumers. Hard-cooked eggs or dried fruit and nuts mixes are affordable, portable and truly energizing. Chances are you will also live longer to enjoy the good life.
