Brunner’s 33 leads Aquin to Class 1A title

Freeport Aquin all-state senior Sophie Brunner put her final mark on Illinois girls Class 1A basketball Saturday in a big-time way.

Brunner, who is signed with Arizona State, exploded for 33 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to a 55-46 win over Mount Pulaski in the IHSA state championship game at Redbird Arena in Normal.

Aquin (33-2), which won its second straight 1A title, trailed 14-7 after the first quarter before coming back to lead 32-31 at halftime.

Elayna Erdmier added 11 points and 6 rebounds for Aquin.

Jessica Awe scored 19 points and had 6 rebounds for Mount Pulaski (29-6), while Erika Levvr added 11 points.

Annawan 47, Cowden-Herrick 37: Celina VanHyfte had 16 points and 7 rebounds while Maddie Jackson added 16 points and 8 boards to lead Annawan (31-3 to a win in the Class 1A third-place game. Micah Jones had 13 points and 21 rebounds and Ava Paruelski added 12 points and 7 rebounds for Cowden-Herrick (26-7).
