U of Ill. Students consider Assembly Hall fee

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — University of Illinois students will vote next month on a $25-per-semester fee administrators hope will raise funds to help pay for Assembly Hall renovations.

The measure is on the ballot for campus elections on March 5-6.

The News-Gazette in Champaign reports (http://bit.ly/UQport) the fee would raise about $2.1 million a year.

The Assembly Hall renovation project's price tag is currently set at $160 million. The university expects to soon award a contract for architectural plans.

Students already pay $1,433 in fees every semester. That includes $544 for the Assembly Hall and other fee-supported services such as the campus recreation program. A $34 fee is used to help pay off completed renovations at Memorial Stadium.
