Hurricane victims appreciate local help

A few weeks ago, you had an article that mentioned the volunteer work of Joe Rostron of Lindenhurst. I wanted to be sure to tell him how grateful I am that people like him exist, on behalf of myself and also my sister who is a resident of Union Beach, N.J. — the town he helped immensely after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.

He saw with his own eyes the pain and anguish that these folks went through and what many are still going through today.

My sister was one of the lucky ones. She only lost everything on the first floor. Most everything on the second floor was spared and because they evacuated to a relative's home, they did not lose their cars which so many people did as well.

She was one of three people on her block whose house was not condemned and bulldozed. Rebuilding is a nightmare, since many people don't have the money to do so if they did not have flood insurance and FEMA checks have yet to be seen.

Salvaging efforts still go on if properties are not condemned but with the awful weather hitting the East Coast, it makes everything more desperate for these folks.

Most of the money raised through large organization relief funds have not yet reached them, either.

Please don't forget these folks — they're still suffering.

Thanks again Joe for caring and giving back.
