Apple says its Mac computers infected by malware

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple Inc. said a limited number of internal Mac systems were affected by malware in an attack that was directed at Apple and other companies.

“We identified a small number of systems within Apple that were infected and isolated them from our network,” Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple said in a statement today. “There is no evidence that any data left Apple. We are working closely with law enforcement to find the source of the malware.”

Facebook Inc. said last week that it was subjected to a “sophisticated attack” by hackers, without saying where the attack originated. The attack took advantage of the same vulnerabilities used by the hackers who targeted Apple. Apple didn’t mention Facebook in its statement.
