Thirteen minutes into Wednesday’s night regional semifinal in Johnsburg, the heavily favored Carmel Catholic Corsairs held a 16-9 lead on the home-standing Skyhawks and the 16th seed in the Vernon Hills sectional.
And then the second-seeded Corsairs went on a 15-2 run and put this Class 3A girls basketball contest away. Cassidy Kloss led a balanced attack with 12 points, as Carmel notched its 20th win of the season with a 48-30 victory.
Carmel coach Kelly Perz was just happy to see her regulars back in the lineup.
“It’s the first time we’ve had our five starters in three weeks,’’ Perz said. “We’ve had a concussion, sickness and the flu. But this was a good game for us.”
Kayla Quinn backed up the Carmel attack with 9 points. Also helping the Corsairs (20-9) were Claire Ogrinc (8 points), Kathleen Felicelli (7 points) and Nicole Bitter (6 points).
Carmel will play No. 7 Guerin, a 46-32 winner over No. 10 North Chicago, in Friday’s 7:30 p.m. regional final.
