Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart students begin Lent by sponsoring a screening of “Girl Rising,” a film that journeys the globe to witness the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change the world.
Deeply concerned about removing barriers to girls’ education around the world, Woodlands student government, WACOR, Campus Ministry, Common Ground, Global Programs and Service Club have signed up to bring this new film to a movie theater in Lincolnshire.
“Girl Rising” spotlights the stories of unforgettable girls born into unforgiving circumstances. It captures their dreams, voices and remarkable lives. Each girl’s story is transformed for the screen by an acclaimed writer from her native country. “Girl Rising” is directed by Academy Award-nominated Richard Robbins and features performances from Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Selena Gomez, Salma Hayak and Alicia Keys. Academy Award winner Rachel Portman, in collaboration with Hans Zimmer, wrote the original music.
The Woodlands-sponsored screening will take place when students sell 100 tickets for the 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 11, showing at the Lincolnshire Stadium 21 & Imax, 300 Parkway Drive, Lincolnshire. Tickets are $10 each, and students invite all interested persons to help them reserve 100 tickets online in advance to guarantee the screening. Tickets can be purchased on the Woodlands website, www.woodlandsacademy.org, or at http://gathr.us/screening/1073 (enter 60045 if prompted for a zip code).
Millions of girls around the world face barriers to education that boys do not. And yet, when a girl is educated, cycles of poverty are broken in just one generation.
“Girl Rising” will be released in theaters on the eve of International Women’s Day. Woodlands’ requested screening falls within that week of International Women’s Day and is designed to raise awareness about why educating girls matters to all of us. ###
