Sewer explosion in Milwaukee causes power outage

MILWAUKEE — An underground explosion in downtown Milwaukee knocked out power to hundreds of customers.

Firefighters found thick, black smoke pouring from a manhole Sunday evening. The explosion littered the street with chunks of asphalt. About 550 We Energies customers lost power, which was restored by Monday morning.

Deputy Fire Chief Aaron Lipski tells the Journal Sentinel that an apparent failure of underground electrical lines created the burst of energy.

Authorities blocked off an area around the Pfister Hotel.
