Oakton students raise awareness about violence against women
Oakton Community College students will join in the “One Billion Rising” global campaign to raise awareness about violence against women and girls this Valentine’s Day.
The college’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program is joining organizations from more than 160 countries worldwide to participate in the campaign calling for one billion men and women to raise awareness about violence against women. Students, faculty, staff, and community members will gather, dance, and sing “Break the Chain,” the campaign’s theme song, starting at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in the main lobby of the college’s campuses in Des Plaines, 1600 E. Golf Road, and Skokie, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave.
More than 75 participants are expected to take part at both campuses. The event is free and open to the public. As part of the campaign, there will be three benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues at 8 p.m., Feb. 14 through 16, at Oakton’s Des Plaines campus. Proceeds from the staged reading of Eve Ensler’s play will fund awareness about the brutality against women.
