They were definitely dancing for dollars Saturday night at Eagle Brook Country Club in Geneva — and doing the city proud at the same time.

Geneva Aldermen Sam Hill and Dorothy Flanagan earned the most $1 votes with their rumba to capture the title of champions at the fifth annual "Dancing With The Geneva Stars" fundraiser.

Six couples competed for the top prize at the event, which raises money for the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission and the Geneva Academic Foundation. This year's event raised $12,710 for the organizations.

Supporters cast votes for the couples on the arts commission website the past month, while those in attendance cast votes during each dance. Voters could cast as many $1 votes as they liked for their favorites.

Dorothy Flanagan has been Geneva's Fourth Ward alderman for the past 19 years. She co-chairs the Geneva Beautification Committee and is vice president of marketing and sales for Copia International, a software publishing company. Sam Hill is retired, and he truly loves to dance. Sam has served as First Ward alderman for 12 years. He previously served on the Geneva Plan Commission, the Geneva Park District Board and currently serves on the Park Foundation Board. Sam is the city liaison to the Chamber board of directors.

Other couples competing this year included Justin and Katlyn Eggar, Steve and Lynn Saunders, Eric and Elizabeth Ott, Kevin and Mary Keyzer, and Adil and Kathy Jaffer.

Champions from the first four years returned to the dance floor this year to perform a group dance. They were Tom and Mary Rogers, Jane and Peter Cladis, Harry and Marcia Smith, and Derek Swanson and Laura Rush.

For the fifth straight year, the event attracted a sellout crowd that filled the country club's main ballroom.
