It seems the issue of gay marriage is taking some precedence these days in Illinois, and I say that it's about time we recognize gay marriage as a legitimate way for same-sex couples to express their love and form stable families.
A majority of people in Illinois support the freedom to marry for same-sex couples. This growing, enlightened majority reflects changing attitudes across every demographic group, spanning religious, political, ethnic, and age boundaries.
Of course, that won't stop some from bemoaning the supposed "loss of morality in society" and similar silliness as we make progress toward equality. It should be pointed out that similar voices cried out in protest a generation or two ago against interracial marriage, yet it seems that society has survived.
My advice to those wringing their hands about the prospect that gays could marry is this: If you don't agree with gay marriage, then don't have one. Pretty simple, really.
Come on, people, let's share the love. Valentine's Day is right around the corner, so contact your legislator and tell them to support legislation granting the freedom to marry to same-sex couples in Illinois.
