Sex offender pleads guilty to rape in St. Charles

By Harry Hitzeman

A 67-year-old sex offender pleaded guilty Friday to sexually assaulting a developmentally disabled woman in St. Charles last June.

Gary Kluber, of the 100 block of South 10th Avenue, St. Charles, faces between four and 15 years in prison when sentenced on April 3 by Kane County Judge John Barsanti.

Kluber pleaded guilty to the criminal sexual assault of a 35-year-old Aurora woman, who also is developmentally disabled.

Kluber was staying with a relative and the woman came to visit because she was dating the relative.

Police said Kluber was alone with the woman and forced himself on her, even though she repeatedly told him to stop.

Friday's plea is at least the third felony conviction for Kluber, and he is not eligible for probation.

Kluber completed four years of probation after a 1987 sex attack in Aurora, court records show.

He was charged in June 1988 with aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a felony that carried a penalty of anywhere from probation to seven years in prison.

He pleaded guilty in October 1988 and was sentenced to 216 days of periodic imprisonment and four years probation.

The first year was intensive probation because he molested a girl younger than 13 in December 1987, when he was 42, records show.

In early 2010, he was charged with felony unlawful presence of a child sex offender in a school zone, which in this case was East Aurora High School.

He served 30 days in the Kane County jail, was given a year of conditional discharge and assessed $760 in fines and court costs.

Kluber has been held at the Kane County jail since his June arrest.
