Fresh from the holidays, and eager to face their first competition of the New Year, the girls from Ultimate Gymnastics of Gurnee really delivered at the recent St Jude Benefit meet in Schaumburg.
The Level 7s turned in a strong performance, taking second place as a team and notching up some impressive scores along the way. In the 12-year-old age group, Ultimate took all four event gold medals with Lake Forest’s Jessica Pasquesi winning both beam and floor titles, Chapin Grumhaus taking gold on bars and Leah Medenwaldt top on vault. Jessica and Chapin took silver and bronze respectively in the all-around while Laken Ritzert placed second on both vault and floor.
In the 11-year-old age group, Grace Miller scored an impressive 9.80 to take gold on floor exercise and added a second place on vault. Meanwhile, teammate Sylvia Raquel won vault and placed second on bars. In the 10-year-old age group, Aaliyah Humphreys placed third on vault, floor and in the all-around.
At Level 8, the Ultimate girls dominated on floor exercise. Twelve-year-old Ella Peter won gold for her floor routine and also added a first-place finish on beam. In the 13-year-old age group Emily Whitis scored 9.675 to win floor gold and in the 14-and-older group, Katie Schroeder placed first on floor with Caroline Grumhaus second. Katie also claimed the top spot in the all-around and silver on vault while Caroline took second place on beam.
At Level 5, Ashley Derrick turned in an outstanding performance, placing first on vault, bars, beam and in the all-around. Only a silver medal on floor exercise prevented a clean sweep of gold for the Gurnee native in the 7- to 8-year-old age group. There was also silver for Jenna Ritzert on beam in the 10B age group and silver for Emily Isabelli on floor in the 10A group.
At Level 10, Gurnee’s Emily Basara placed first on vault, bars, beam and in the all-around in the Senior age group. She was also second on floor. In the Junior age group Ally Hoyer scored an impressive 9.60 on floor exercise to take bronze in this event.
