Talk with the Editor: Building the suburbs' best calendar

We surveyed hundreds of subscribers last year, and one of the things we learned was how deeply interested you are in local entertainment news and information — and particularly, in things to do.

We've taken your interest seriously.

Today, I'm excited to announce our greatest local entertainment improvement yet — an event calendar that we aim to build into the best tool in existence for helping you find things to do in the suburbs.

I hope you'll check it out. You can get to it directly at www.dailyherald.com/calendar. You can get to a mobile version of it on your smartphone by using the same web address.

The tool allows you to zero in on a town, or set a radius from a particular location. And to zero in on a particular day or on a series of days. Play with the calendar a little bit, and I think you'll be impressed by its flexibility and versatility.

The calendar is ready to use today. But it will become even better in the days ahead. We plan to keep improving it and keep making it more complete.

We're asking institutions in town to help by submitting their events. That's easy to do by clicking on "Add an event" on the same www.dailyherald.com/calendar page and registering. A trained calendar staff will verify and approve each event before it appears.

It will be a complete events listing. That is, you'll be able to use it to check out entertainment in Chicago too. But our focus is going to be on the suburbs — what's going on close to home. We intend to do that better than anyone else.

I hope you find it helpful and easy to use. And that you'll let us know what you think.
