Continental Tire plans $129 million expansion

By

MOUNT VERNON — Continental Tire of the Americas plans to invest $129 million at its Mount Vernon plant in an expansion project that will create more than 100 new full-time jobs over the next three years.

Company officials say the expansion is needed because of increased demand for Continental and General brand tires.

Vice President of Manufacturing Benny Harmse says the project includes $95 million to expand the company’s commercial vehicle tire production. Other funds will be used to expand a warehouse and upgrade equipment.

The company has invested more than $600 million in the Mount Vernon facility since 2006. Harmse says that’s because Mount Vernon is a business-friendly community with a dedicated workforce.

Continental Tire’s Mount Vernon plant currently employs 3,200 people and produces more than 14 million tires each year.
