Elgin teen gets probation for misdemeanor battery
An Elgin teen appeared before Cook County Judge Jill Cerone Marisie Thursday afternoon and apologized for striking an Elgin High School resource officer last September claiming, “my mind was not right that day.”
Chante Butler, 18, pleaded guilty to battery after prosecutors amended the charge to a misdemeanor. In exchange for Butler’s guilty plea, Marisie sentenced her to 18 months probation and ordered her to obtain her high school degree. The judge also ordered Butler to undergo a mental health evaluation.
Defense attorney James Young informed the court that Butler is seeking treatment.
“I don’t believe she will pose a problem,” he said.
The altercation occurred about noon Sept. 27 when school personnel found Butler in a faculty restroom, said Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Lesley Gool. Butler struck the officer, an Elgin detective, after he instructed her to go to the school office.
Butler apologized to the detective whom she said she knew and whom she described as a buddy.
The detective agreed with the sentence, said Gool.
