New tick-borne illness discovered

text size: AAA

A new tick-borne illness caused by the bacterium borrelia miyamotoi has been confirmed in patients in northeast U.S. states where Lyme disease is already endemic.

"While many symptoms are similar to Lyme disease, patients also may experience other symptoms, such as relapsing fever," said Peter Krause, senior research scientist at the School of Public Health and author of the study which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Fishing report:

Fox Chain: With Arctic-like temperatures now upon us, ice anglers can breathe a sigh of relief — maybe. Look to the side access points on Channel Lake for crappie and bluegill. The same is true for Petite Lake. Be extra careful in your explorations because some areas have thin ice and have not completely solidified. A few anglers have discovered nice walleye action on Pistakee Lake.

Bangs Lake: Pike and bluegill action on the menu, especially on the far east end in 8 feet of water.
