A Clarendon Hills man imprisoned for the 2005 beating death of a University of Illinois-Chicago student has been released from prison and deported to his native Lithuania.
Mantas Matulis was sentenced to 18 years in prison for his part in the beating death of Tombol Malik. Matulis was convicted in 2007 of second-degree murder. A second man, Muaz Haffar, was charged in the death of Malik's death, but disappeared while free on $900,000 bond.
According to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Matulis was released from prison in November and deported to Lithuania on Tuesday.
Prosecutors contended Matulis contributed to the 23-year-old political science student's death by using a stun gun on him and kicking him in the head after Haffar, convicted in absentia, beat Malik with a steel bicycle lock.
