FBI: Carol Stream man linked to other bank robberies

By Sara Hooker

A Carol Stream man recently charged with robbing a bank in Elgin has been linked to 17 bank robberies in multiple states since last summer, according the FBI.

Jeremy Evans, 30, of the 100 block of Horizon Circle, was arrested last Tuesday shortly after the Old Second National Bank on Route 20 and Nessler Road was robbed.

Since then, FBI agents say they've linked Evans -- dubbed the "Ray Bandit" for a tendency to wear Ray Ban-like sunglasses during the robberies -- to bank robberies in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, California, and Virginia.

Officials say Evans is being investigated in numerous other unsolved bank robberies in other states and is expected to receive additional charges as the investigation progresses.

More than $75,000 was stolen from these 17 robberies -- including three that took place in Elgin, officials say.

During last week's robbery, officials say Evans jumped on the counter and displayed a handgun while wearing a mask and demanding money. He fled in a white Toyota Camry. Officers stopped the vehicle minutes later and found a mask and gloves, as well as $4,812 and an air-soft gun, according to police.

Evans is currently being held without bond at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago.
