text size: AAA

A jury has convicted a Chicago gynecologist of raping a patient who was eight months pregnant.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that 60-year-old Bruce Sylvester Smith was convicted Thursday, a day after he testified the victim initiated the sexual contact during an office exam.

The jury believed the victim, who immediately reported the rape to police.

The rape occurred in August 2002, but Smith wasn't arrested until 2010. That's when prosecutors admitted "mistakes were made" because Smith's DNA sample was never taken after the woman reported the attack.

Smith's medical license was suspended for nine months in 2009 after several women came forward to accuse him of sexual misconduct. State officials say his license was revoked in 2011 for unrelated reasons.

He was never charged in any other cases.
