Dawn Patrol: Grayslake Dist. 46 strike begins; Lisa Stone accused

Breaking News: The Chicago Bears have named Marc Trestman the new head coach. Trestman, Trestman, 57, has spent the past five seasons as head coach of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League, where he’s posted a 64-34 record and won back-to-back Grey Cup championships. Grayslake Dist. 46 talks break down; strike is on

Grayslake Elementary District 46 teachers will be going on strike today after talks between their union and the school board broke down just after midnight this morning. Contract negotiations had begun about 4 p.m. yesterday and ended about eight hours later at Park Campus School in Round Lake. Teachers have been without a contract since July 1 and compensation is at the heart of the dispute. Board President Ray Millington said early this morning he doesn’t know when the two sides will resume negotiations. Full story.

Buffalo Grove mayor files police report against Lisa Stone

Buffalo Grove Village President Jeffrey Braiman said he has filed a police report against former Trustee Lisa Stone. The report was filed Sunday, hours after he received a 2:30 a.m. phone call from Stone. The report said Braiman told police “the situation with Ms. Stone appears to be escalating.” About two weeks ago, Stone showed up at his office in Arlington Heights, when Braiman said Stone wanted to give him her business card for her sex toy business, the report said. Campton Hills trustees reject Kiva rehab center

After months of consideration, Campton Hills trustees voted last night 4-2 to deny a plan to convert a former school into a private, 96-bed drug treatment center. Voting against the Kiva Recovery Center were trustees Laura Anderson, Susan George, Al Lenkaitis Jr. and Mike Millette. Lenkaitis cited a postcard survey conducted by the village in which three-quarters of respondents opposed the plan for the former, 120-acre Glenwood School site. Full story.

Human heads that were discovered at O’Hare claimed

A cremation service claimed the 18 human heads yesterday that were uncovered by an X-ray at O’Hare International Airport last month. The heads, used for medical research, were finally sent to the Cook County medical examiner’s office Monday; now the FBI has custody and won’t release the heads yet. Lost paperwork left U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers surprised by the nature of the cargo. Full story.

Schaumburg chief’s accuser pushing village investigation

Although a criminal investigation into the actions of Schaumburg Police Chief Brian Howerton ended this week after being called unfounded, an attorney representing his ex-girlfriend says they’re hopeful an internal investigation will move forward. Howerton’s ex-girlfriend, Dawn Davis, has accused him of stalking, intimidating and harassment. Full story.

Man gets 30 years in Lake Villa home invasion

A man found guilty of kidnapping and home invasion was sentenced to 30 years in prison yesterday. Miguel Rico, 20, formerly of Antioch, faces a total of 60 years in prison after recently being found guilty of a similar crime in Antioch Township. Full story.

Dist. 128 fires Libertyville band instructor over relationship with student

A Libertyville High School band instructor has been fired for having an inappropriate physical relationship with a female student, District 128 officials said. Jeffrey Daeschler, who joined the staff in 2010, had been on paid administrative leave since November. The student was 18 at the time of the relationship, but the superintendent said it can’t be considered consensual. Full story.

Master plan for Lake Ellyn Park updates approved

The Glen Ellyn Park District board of commissioners last night voted 6-1 to approve a 75-page master plan for Lake Ellyn Park, a century-old park in Glen Ellyn that includes a historic boathouse constructed as part of the Works Progress Administration. The plans would include restoring the boathouse to its New Deal-era glory. Next come discussions on how to fund all the improvements. Full story.

Rose inches closer to game play

The Bulls’ Derrick Rose is one step away from game action, coach Tom Thibodeau said after yesterday’s practice at the Berto Center. It’s been 8½ months since Rose tore the ACL in his left knee during the playoffs against Philadelphia. Rose is now participating for much of practice, but he has yet to take on any contact.
