Cook County Sheriff's Police stopped a burglary in progress Tuesday and caught a suspect also implicated in another burglary in the area, authorities said.
John W. Gilliam, 35, of Chicago, has been charged with felony residential burglary and appeared in bond court Wednesday. Bond was set at $100,000.
After hearing suspicious noises, an unincorporated Maine Township resident called sheriff's police at about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday to investigate a neighboring apartment in the 8900 block of Kennedy Drive.
Police caught the suspect in the apartment, foiling an attempted burglary, according to a police news release. A search of the offender uncovered a single-handle lug nut iron, screwdriver and pocket knife. The suspect also had jewelry and a set of car keys belonging to a stolen car in the adjoining driveway. The owner of the vehicle was contacted and the vehicle was towed.
At about 9 p.m. Tuesday, a second burglary was reported at an apartment in the 9600 block of Brandy Court in unincorporated Maine Township. The missing items reported matched items found in the vehicle that was towed earlier that day, the news release said.
Gilliam's is scheduled to appear Jan. 24 at the Cook County courthouse in Skokie.Copyright © 2013 Paddock Publications, Inc. All rights reserved.
