Do you want to know how slow your commute will be? Or would you prefer the bumper-to-bumper trip to be a pleasant surprise?
Drivers who want the bad news in advance can assess traffic at certain locations on the Illinois tollway as a result of camera images available on the agency’s website as of Tuesday.
Feeds from traffic cameras offer instantaneous views of road conditions from the following sites:
ź The Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) at Roselle Road, Route 59 and Riverside Boulevard (in Rockford);
ź The Tri-State Tollway (I-94/I-294) at Cicero Avenue, 95th Street, the Hinsdale Oasis, Golf Road, Willow Road, Deerfield Road, Buckley Road and Waukegan Road;
ź The Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355) at 127th Street and the Spring Creek Toll Plaza;
ź The Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) at the Aurora Toll Plaza and at I-355.
The goal in posting the images is to give drivers another source of information to manage their travel decisions, tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur said. Other sources of traffic updates include www.travelmidwest.com/lmiga/home.jsp.
To see road conditions, go to the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority’s website and click on “View Traffic Cameras.” A virtual map will appear with camera icons that lets drivers zoom in on specific locations. Fifteen camera feeds are available and are updated every five minutes.
All cameras offer up to a half mile of clear imagery, although some go beyond that distance, depending on the camera height. The agency plans to offer more camera locations in the future, spokeswoman Wendy Abrams said.
