I know some of you in the suburbs have had encounters with coyotes. Some dogs had been snatched from back patios and decks, while most of the confrontations have been with unattended pets.

That's not the case in another place.

Faron Scarberry, of Kent, Wash., was recently attacked by three coyotes while walking his dog in his backyard, sending him to the emergency room, where he received multiple shots to prevent rabies.

"I love wildlife," he said in a report for KOMO-TV. "I like looking out the deck, looking at them. But when they're starting to threaten the animals and people in the neighborhood, it's gone a little bit overboard."

Fishing update:

Lake Michigan: I'm not sure if the winter cold has put perch fishing on ice, so to speak. But as the harbor water clears, there be some hungry fish willing to grab a minnow.

Fox Chain: There are several inches of ice on Petite Lake. Channel Lake ice is roughly 4-inches thick in places and crappies are on the bite.

Bangs Lake: Look for safer ice conditions closer to shore on the south end near Wauconda Boat. Check the weed edges for crappie and bluegills.

Silver Lake: The DuPage County "Hard-Water Classic" Ice-Fishing Tournament has been rescheduled to its announced backup date of Feb. 9 on Silver Lake in the Blackwell Preserve.
